Before I start explaining the reason why you need to start a blog, I want to suggest one reason why we might not. The answer is simple, you see, in that the purpose for blogging is not just to generate sales.

No, blogging is a great place to find your customers, to feed them worthwhile information, and to position your value. It’s a place where your future customers might get to know you better, learn to trust you, and eventually recognize that you are an expert in your field.

Do People Need To Read Your Blog?

Of course they do! Believe it or not, people are likely to be looking for your blog right now. Sure, they’re apt to be on the Internet to buy something, but they’re more likely to be seeking information. That’s why many advertising dollars are wasted away as bloggers simply push a product, while offering little or no information. Or, worse yet, they get in the way of a web user’s search for information.

Does this sound anything like a blog you’ve recently read? If so, here are two quick tips:

First, provide valuable information to your readers.

Second, provide that information in a way that isn’t salesy.

Said yet another way, we’re aiming to create our blogs with our customers in mind, and in hopes that the information we provide will keep them coming back.

Google Is Grading You

Frankly, there’s just so much information on the Internet period nowadays. So, how can we stand out from our competitors amid such an ever-expanding sea of information?

Google and other search engines are so smart… For example, right after you start a blog, the search engine bots add your written content through their algorithms. If you use proper grammar and spelling, your blog receives a higher grade, and the same if your site visitors like, share, or comment about your articles. Keywords are also super-important to the search engines.

Consequently, make sure you do the right keyword research should you create a blog, and you might do so using tools like these:

Depending on how many of those words your site has, the algorithm will either boost your site’s relevancy, or simply ignore you all together (oh no, you don’t want that).

What should I write about?

Once you make the decision to start blogging, write about your customers, your products, your successes, your failures, and the lessons you’ve learned. Share some interesting stories with your audience, perhaps including the reason you decided to become an entrepreneur.

Create personal stories about your business success, or how you did it. This helps your brand become relatable.

As noted earlier, people go to the Internet to find information, and this can include product reviews.

If people connect with you through your blog, you can leverage the power of such reviews.

Can you outsource the writing of your blog?

Of course you can! There are many professional bloggers who can do the writing for you. For a fee, they’ll create articles that will appeal to your audience (this process referred to as “content marketing”).

However, poorly created content marketing can come off as being insincere. So, be absolutely sure your outsourced content is created by someone with a tone and style similar to yours.

Among the ways to accomplish the latter, is to record your own content in a voice recorder, or maybe have a writer interview you. But again, no matter how you decide to work together, make sure that the content and writing styles are similar.

How often should you blog?

Perhaps the greatest challenge is to not provide just enough information, while not overloading your most faithful readers. Personally, I prefer either once per week or even once every two weeks posting. No matter what you decide, however, always make sure to create content that is genuinely useful to your readers.

The quality of your blog content matters greatly. And, in a perfect blog world, you might want to create posts at least slightly more frequently than your competitors. It’s even possible that Google and other search engines will see your site as more active than competitors, and thusly give your blog a boost.

Think of it this way: each time you add a blog post, you’re creating momentum, with the likelihood that a given reader will eventually become a loyal customer.
